Larriers 50 years ago

Last Friday Miss Sunderland's dad came in to talk to us. His name is Brian Sunderland. He came in to tell us about our school 50 years ago. He said that they had nicknames for some of the brothers. They called Brother Fampton 'Framball' and that they called Brother McKeown 'Bottleneck'. They didn't have a uniform but they had to wear a school cap. There was a teacher in every class but they didn't
have an SNA. The teachers weren't very understanding because if you got an answer wrong they would hit you with a cane or a leather or giver you a clatter. They would write with a fountain pen and if you couldn't afford one you would write with an ink well and an nib.If you put too much ink on the nib and your page got messy you would get a clatter. In Brian's class he had 40 or 50 boys. We only have 18 in our class. On one trip they went to see where Michael Collins ran from the English. They could still see the footprints. He said that for lunch they went home and had an hour and a half, we only have 15 minutes for break and a half an hour for lunch.

A Trip to the Young Scientest in the RDS by Josh

Today our class went to the BT Young Scientest Exhibition. We got the National College of Ireland bus to it. I did a quiz and won a copy, pen, ruler and pencil. We also saw a show there. My favourite project was the Honey Bee project. I also got to sit on a Garda motorbike and I flooded it by accident. It was real jammers. When I went to the toilet with Debby we couldn't find the rest of the class for a while! We all had our lunch at around 1 o'clock. We got the same bus back. Overall me and my class had a great time.

Dainel O Connell

Daniel O'Connell
By David

In 1798 there was a rebellion Between Ireland and England so The Act of Union was introduced in 1801 to stop another rebellion. The main points of the Act were:
1. The two countries would become one and be called "The united kingdom of Britian and Ireland."

2. Ireland no longer had a parliment it was now in London.

3. Irish members had to travel to London to take their seat.

Daniel O'Connell did not agree with violence and wanted Ireland to become it's own country again,BUT by peaceful means. This was called Catholic Emancipation.
In 1823 the Catholic Association was started. He had the support of all Catholics in Ireland and was elected as an MP in 1829. He could not take up his seat because he was catholic. The prime minister thought there would be another rebellion due to this so he allowed Catholic Emancipation in 1829.He could now claim his seat in Westminster and became known as "The Liberator".
He didn't agree with the Act of Union and wanted to get rid of it.So he organised "monster meetings" around Ireland to speak to the Irish people.
In 1847 the famine tore Ireland and it's people apart they had no food or work, all their crops had rotted. Daniel O'Connell died on a pilgrimage to Rome. He is buried in Glasnevin cemetery.

Ireland is very proud of Daniel O'Connell. He was pictured on the £20 note before the Euro came in.

There is a big statue of him on O'Connell Street.

Here is an old painting of Daniel. I wonder what is it he might be holding?
Here is another old painting. This one is of one of his famous Monster Meetings.

Boxing by Lee

We started boxing every Thursday in September with Paul. It was great fun. I thought it was easy.

In October Josh, Dillon, Alan and I started the Silver Boxing Programme up in Ballybough. We started doing sparring. It was even more fun but it was a bit harder than the boxing back at the school. We went up every Tuesday. Some of the group are getting picked to go on the Gold Programme after the Halloween break.
